You cannot judge an insulation quote by its total. A fair quote says exactly what goes where: the product, the final R-value or depth, the square footage of each area, whether air sealing and old insulation removal are included, and whether the finished job meets rebate rules. Published prices will not settle it either. When we surveyed Utah insulation companies in September 2026, only 2 of the 18 we could assess published any price for insulation work, and none published the product, depth and area alongside a price. Comparing two itemized written quotes line by line is the only reliable check.
Utah Valley Foam is an independent insulation referral service for Utah County, not a contractor. “Is this quote fair?” was one of the most common questions in the nearly 2,800 Reddit threads on insulation and heating we reviewed in October 2026.
What a Complete Insulation Quote Includes
| Line on the quote | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Square footage for each area | Attic floor, rim joists, walls and crawl space are priced differently. A single total hides that. |
| Product name and type | Open cell foam, closed cell foam, blown cellulose and fiberglass perform differently. The most discussed spray foam thread we found was about the wrong one being installed. |
| Final R-value or depth for each area | For climate zone 5 attics, ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 to R-60. The ThermWise attic rebate requires the attic to end between R-49 and R-60. |
| Air sealing, and where | ENERGY STAR recommends sealing attic leaks before insulating, and lists the big ones as kneewalls, the attic hatch, wiring and plumbing holes, dropped soffits, recessed lights and the flue or duct chase. Ask which of these are included. |
| Old insulation removal, as its own line | So you can see what the removal costs. ENERGY STAR warns not to disturb vermiculite insulation without testing it for asbestos. |
| Combustion safety testing | If you have naturally venting gas appliances, ENERGY STAR recommends testing them before and after air sealing. |
| Rebate eligibility | Most ThermWise rebates require an authorized contractor. Ask before signing whether the job qualifies and who files the paperwork. |
| Licence number and insurance | The CPSC recommends verifying a contractor’s insurance and licences. Utah has a public licence lookup. |
| Re-entry time, for spray foam | The CPSC says residents should vacate for at least 24 hours. Get the time for your product in writing. |
| Warranty, in writing | What is covered, for how long, and by whom: the installer, the manufacturer, or both. |
What Utah Companies Actually Publish
For our cost page we examined 21 Utah insulation companies on September 1, 2026, and could assess 18. Fifteen publish no price at all. These are the published figures we found, quoted from each company’s own site:
| Company | What it publishes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| American Foam Solutions, Lehi | Open cell $1.20 to $1.80 per square foot installed; closed cell $1.80 to $2.50 per square foot installed; “a 1,200 sq ft attic floor with open-cell may range from $1,500 to $3,200 depending on depth and prep work”; “Prices updated as of November 2025” | Lehi page |
| Green Home Specialties, West Haven and Provo | “Attic insulation can cost anywhere from $1,700 to $2,100”, or “$1.50 to $3.50 per square foot”; no product, depth or R-value stated | Attic cost guide |
Even these are hard to use. American Foam Solutions publishes the same $1.20 to $1.80 open cell figure on its Provo page for foam “based on a 3.5 to 4 inch average thickness” and on its Logan page “per inch of thickness”. Those two readings differ by roughly four to one. A price without a depth tells you very little, which is why the depth belongs on your quote.
How to Compare Two Quotes
- Line up the same areas. If one quote includes rim joists and the other does not, compare only the areas both cover.
- Check the final R-value for each area is the same. A cheaper quote to R-38 is not cheaper than a quote to R-49.
- Divide each area’s price by its square footage, so you are comparing price per square foot at the same R-value.
- Add back anything one quote leaves out: removal, air sealing, baffles, disposal.
- Subtract any rebate each quote qualifies for. ThermWise pays $0.32 per square foot for qualifying attic insulation.
Worked example, with made-up numbers: Quote A is $2,400 to insulate a 1,000 square foot attic to R-49, which is $2.40 per square foot. Quote B is $2,100 for the same attic to R-38 and leaves out air sealing. Quote B looks cheaper, but it buys less insulation and less work.
Red Flags on an Insulation Quote
- A federal tax credit. The 25C credit does not apply to insulation placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS. In our survey, one Utah company’s site still advertised it.
- No product named. If the quote says “spray foam” or “blown insulation” without a product and type, you cannot hold anyone to it.
- A total with no areas or depths. There is nothing to compare.
- No licence number. Check it on Utah’s licence lookup.
Insulation Quote FAQ
How much should attic insulation cost in Utah County?
Few Utah companies publish prices. Of 18 we assessed in September 2026, two did: American Foam Solutions publishes $1,500 to $3,200 for open cell spray foam on a 1,200 square foot attic floor, and Green Home Specialties publishes $1,700 to $2,100 for attic insulation without stating product or depth. Your price depends on area, product, final R-value, air sealing and removal, so compare itemized quotes.
Is it worth getting more than one insulation quote?
Yes. Only 2 of 18 Utah insulation companies we assessed published any price, and none published product, depth and area together, so a second itemized quote is the only real benchmark you will have. Compare price per square foot at the same final R-value.
Should air sealing be a separate line on the quote?
It should be stated clearly. ENERGY STAR recommends sealing attic air leaks before adding insulation, and Enbridge Gas ThermWise pays a separate air sealing rebate of $200 per job plus $0.10 per square foot of conditioned floor area, up to $850, so you want to see what air sealing is included and where.
How do I check an insulation contractor’s licence in Utah?
Use the State of Utah’s public licence lookup at secure.utah.gov/llv and search the business or person named on the quote. The CPSC also recommends verifying insurance and checking references before hiring a spray foam contractor.
Can I still get a federal tax credit for insulation?
No. The IRS says the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Utah homeowners can still use utility rebates such as Enbridge Gas ThermWise and Rocky Mountain Power wattsmart, if the job meets their rules.
What R-value should an attic insulation quote say?
For climate zone 5, which includes Utah County, ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an uninsulated attic and R-49 for an attic with 3 to 4 inches already. The ThermWise attic rebate requires the attic to end between R-49 and R-60.
